Women have made great strides in the working world over the past few decades, but they still often face challenges that men don’t. And many of those challenges are self-imposed. Driven by ambition or guilt, many women try to do it all both at work and at home. But at some point, you’ll likely have to give something up. The key is to prioritize and delegate. And just because you have family commitments doesn’t mean you won’t be able to get a raise or promotion at work. A few suggestions can help you get the salary you deserve and have a happy home life, too.

• Follow your boss’ example when it comes to work ethics and company loyalty. The best way to deliver is to know what your boss is looking for.

• Spend time socializing with your co-workers at all levels, not just your peers. Mingle with supervisors, especially those doling out the cash.

• Be aggressive, and get involved with as much as you can handle at work. The more you get into, the more the company will realize your worth and not want to let you go.

• Don’t be afraid to ask for a raise if you deserve it. Make sure your boss knows of your accomplishments, and do your homework on industry salary standards.

• Realize that it’s OK to say no to a project at work or at home if it overloads you. Accept added tasks only when they allow you to maintain the balance between your work and home life.

• Delegate responsibilities at home. Assign tasks to your husband and kids. Gradually give them more responsibilities, and let them know you appreciate their contributions.

• Make sure your family knows you’re all in this together. Let them know you love them and you love your career. Reinforce the idea of your family as a team—one where everyone wins by working together.
